Sim Poh Giap to challenge former boss for SUPP Pujut top post

MIRI: A former JASA staff attached to Pujut assemblyman’s office, Sim Poh Giap, is expected to challenge his former boss Andy Chia Chu Fatt in the SUPP Pujut branch election for the chairman post.

Sim, 31, now with an insurance company, was a JASA staff from 2007 until early this year.

An electronic engineer by training from UNITEM, Sim assisted Chia in his work to serve Pujut constituency since the later was elected in 2006. But his entry into the fray came as a surprise to many.

Sim is expected to make an official announcement soon. Chia, meanwhile, is reported to be ready to face his challenger in the branch election for the main committee although the former is eligible to be in the Youth Section.

The nomination and polling for the Youth and Women sections would be held on Oct 30, polling on Nov 6, while the central committee election would be on Nov 13.

The sub-branches will hold their meeting on Nov 13 after nomination is concluded on Nov 13, en route to the branch elections.

Nomination for branch election of office-bearers would open on Nov 14 (from 10am to 5pm) while polling would be on Nov 20.

There are currently five (SUPP) branches in Miri – Senadin, Pujut, Piasau, Bekenu and Lambir – which will elect nearly 100 delegates for the party’s central election in December.

The party, which is in the midst of a leadership transitional process will see the organising secretary Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui taking on deputy sec-gen Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh in the contest for the president post, a post currently held by former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam who lost the Piasau seat in the last state election.

Both sides have been working on the ground to shore up support from the delegates of the respective branches.

In Piasau, entrepreneur Hii King Chiong has earlier declared his intention to vie for the Piasau branch chairmanship. If there is to be a contest he (Hii) would likely fight the battle against Chin or his political secretary Datuk Sebastian Ting.

At stake are the delegates to the party’s central election in the Chin-Wong battle, with the organising secretary claiming that the majority of branches
were behind him to contest the post.

Wong had earlier stated that Senadin assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin would be his running mate (secretary general) in the party election but Chin is keeping his card closed to his chest despite rumours that he would team up with Datuk David Teng Lung Chi.

Both Senadin and Pujut are votes-rich with the maximum 28 delegates for the central election, while Piasau has about 20. The biggest block, however, is the southern branches.
