Govt not grabbing land at Gambir Street

KUCHING: The Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF) yesterday brushed aside rumours that the state government was taking away the land at Gambier Street where six shophouses were burned down last year.

Its president Wee Hong Seng said rumours such as this usually arose when the election was just around the corner.

He said the rumour-mongers were being unfair because their comments were baseless and were aimed at bringing down the government.

Among the rumours in circulation is that the back lane of the new shoplots would be taken away by the government. This has made the owners jittery.

“The rumours are not true. In fact, the state government has done a lot for these affected shopowners,” he said.

He revealed that the state government had even approved the rebuilding of the six shoplots.

“The structure of the new shoplots will be in such a form that the owners will benefit more rather than losing,” Wee said.

He hoped the reconstruction work could start as early November this year because tender would be called next month and probably awarded in October.
